Volunteer – Position Description

Position Overview

At Guidance Sign, our volunteers are the heart of our community connection. We are looking for passionate, dedicated individuals to support our family drop-in sessions, community workshops, and peer mentorship networks. Whether you are a fluent BSL signer, a student looking to practice your skills, or someone who simply wants to help hearing parents navigate a new diagnosis, your time can make a massive difference in ain a child's life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with welcoming and registering families at our local community drop-in sessions and events.

  • Provide a friendly, supportive environment where hearing parents can connect and chat with peers.

  • Help with basic administrative tasks, event setup, and digital community group moderation.

  • Support fluent Deaf mentors in delivering visual communication playgroups and family sign-language camps.

  • Required Qualifications & Credentials

    • A warm, compassionate, and open-minded attitude toward supporting families.

    • Knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) is highly valued, but not required—we welcome learners and ally support!

    • A current, enhanced DBS Check (or willingness to complete one through us) to ensure the safety of our children and families.

    • Commited to maintaining the privacy, confidentiality, and respect of all community members.

VOLUNTEER POSITION

Freelance BSL Interpreter – Position Description

  • Role Title: Registered Freelance BSL/English Interpreter

  • Location: Remote (VRI) and In-Person assignments across the UK

  • Contract Type: Freelance / Independent Contractor

Position Overview

Guidance Sign is seeking fully qualified, professional freelance British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreters to join our dynamic digital booking network. As a freelance partner, you will provide high-quality communication access for a wide range of assignments, including corporate meetings, local authority events, medical appointments, and educational settings. You will play a vital role in removing communication barriers and supporting both Deaf individuals and hearing organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver clear, accurate two-way interpretation between British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken or written English.

  • Support corporate B2B clients, medical providers, and local councils to ensure compliance with the UK Equality Act.

  • Deliver reliable, stable interpretation for remote assignments using our digital Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) platforms.

  • Maintain absolute confidentiality and handle all sensitive data according to GDPR regulations.

Required Qualifications & Credentials

To maintain our premium standard of care, all freelance applicants must provide proof of the following before accepting assignments:

  • Full or Trainee registration with the NRCPD (National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People).

  • A current, enhanced DBS Check (Disclosure and Barring Service) for working safely with children and vulnerable adults.

  • Valid Professional Indemnity Insurance coverage.

  • Absolute adherence to the NRCPD Code of Conduct, maintaining punctuality, professionalism, and neutral stance at all times.
